He began his teaching career at the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS), Takoradi, before joining the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), where his passion for education would find its fullest expression. His pursuit of excellence never ceased. While serving in increasingly demanding leadership roles, he continued to invest in his own development, earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Planning and Development from the Institute of Applied Manpower and Research, India (2001), a Master of Arts in Human Resource Development from the University of Cape Coast (2005–2007), an Executive MBA from GIMPA (2013–2014), and ultimately a Doctor of Business Administration from Commonwealth University, United Kingdom (2012–2017). Dr. Stephen Bismark Amponsah devoted over four decades to advancing technical and vocational education in Ghana. His journey began in 1979 at NVTI, Abetifi, where he served as Training Officer/Instructor and later Production Unit Manager. He subsequently became Centre Manager of the Anglican Vocational Training Centre, Zuarungu, where his leadership revived and strengthened the institution.From 1992 to 1999, he established and led the Assin Fosu Vocational Training Centre in the Central Region, building it from its foundations into a respected center for skills training. He later served as Principal Manager of NVTI, Biriwa (2000–2003), then one of the largest NVTI centers, where his tenure marked a major period of institutional growth and infrastructural development.His proven record of transforming institutions led him into national leadership as Commissioner for Trade Testing (2004–2007), Executive Director of NVTI (2007–2017), and finally Director of Research, Statistics and Information Management at the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations (2017–2019), a role he held into his retirement in 2019.

Dr. Amponsah's professional legacy is deeply woven into Ghana's technical and vocational education system. At Biriwa NVTI, he championed major infrastructural improvements, including dormitory blocks, computer laboratories and other facilities that strengthened the institution's capacity.At the national level, his leadership at NVTI helped advance Ghana's TVET reforms through the establishment of the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training Service (GTVET) Headquarters, expansion of regional trade testing offices, and modernization of vocational certification systems. He also led strategic partnerships, including the National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations (NABPTEX) MOU, which created pathways for NVTI Certificate II graduates to progress to Technical Universities, and a collaboration with the Youth Employment Agency, through which approximately 5,000 unemployed Ghanaian youth received employable skills training. For Dr. Stephen Bismark Amponsah, Christian service was not merely a responsibility—it was the very foundation upon which his life was built. Long before he became a respected national educator and public servant, he had committed himself to serving the Lord through The Church of Pentecost, a commitment he faithfully upheld for more than four decades. His walk with God was marked by humility, unwavering faith, servant leadership, and an uncompromising devotion to the work of Christ.Born into the Anglican church where his parents served, he continued to use his gift to equally serve the church. His passion for music inspired him and a group of friends to form a singing group dedicated to visiting churches and ministering through songs. On one such occasion, they visited The Church of Pentecost, Abetifi Central. After they had ministered and returned to their seats, the sermon was preached. He received the message with great joy and was deeply touched by it. Turning to his friends, he declared his intention to join the church, and he faithfully followed through on that decision. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour and was later baptized by the late Pastor Adu Mensah in the early 1980s.That encounter marked a turning point in his life. From then on, he never looked back, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to serving God and growing in his Christian faith. Ordained as a Deacon in 1985, he steadily grew in spiritual maturity and leadership, faithfully serving wherever God's providence and his professional assignments took him. His ministry journey reflected a remarkable progression of faithful service—from Elder and Executive Member of the Abetifi District (1988) to Presiding Elder at Kwahu Pepease Church of Pentecost – 1989(in the Eastern Region) and later Presiding Elder of the church at Zuarungu -1991. He had been transferred to work in the North but typical of a man of faith, carried his faith to the North!. He later served as Elder and Presiding Elder at Assin Foso (1994–1997), became the first Area Deacon for the then Foso Twifo Area (1998–1999) of the church, and again the Area Deacon for the Cape Coast Area (2000–2002) at which time he served as an Elder of the Biriwa Assembly of COP, all in the Central Region. His ministry continued with service as Elder at the Adenta Estate Worship Centre (2002) and Presiding Elder of the Housing Down Local Assembly (2004–2008). He subsequently served as an Elder at Kasoa Central Church [KCC (2008)] and Presiding Elder of KCC 2 (2009–2011). In recognition of his exemplary Christian character, spiritual maturity, and decades of faithful leadership, he was elected Area Deacon of the Kasoa Area (2018–2019), one of the highest lay leadership responsibilities within The Church of Pentecost.Throughout every congregation he served, Eld. Amponsah was known as a man of prayer, sound doctrine, wisdom, integrity, and compassionate leadership.
